For many Aussies, the 1st of September is the perfect day to start cleaning and sprucing up your home.
It marks the beginning of the new spring season and signifies a change in temperature and mood, which people want to reflect on their property.
This manifests itself often in renovation work and deep spring cleaning. But depending on the size of your house, this can be a daunting task.
Here are some quick and efficient strategies for clearing out the cobwebs and transforming your living space into something fresh and full of vitality—just like spring.
One of the first things you should do during a spring clean is to declutter.
This involves getting rid of anything you haven't used for a while and being honest enough to realize that you probably won't use it again.
For instance, when did you last use that old set of side tables in the garage?
Or the 1980s boombox in the back of your bedroom wardrobe?
And how many boxes of unopened crockery and cutlery have you stored away in the kitchen?
Embracing a 'less is more' approach will help you create more living space, reducing the amount of cleaning you will need to do.
While decluttering, divide your belongings into four categories: Those items you will sell, send to charity, recycle, or send off to the tip.
There are plenty of companies, including 1300 Rubbish, that can help you dispose of these items ethically, environmentally conscious, and professionally.
Once you have decluttered, now is the time to fix up and renovate your home.
There are likely plenty of odd little jobs that need doing, such as fastening rickety shelves, peeling and repainting window frames, and replacing light fixtures.
You may also want to enhance the look of your home through small renovations, such as installing new countertops or hardware in the kitchen or ripping up carpets to expose hardwood floors.
Complete all these tasks before starting the cleaning. (Again, a good rubbish removal company can help you eliminate the debris.)
Remember to do a backflow test to ensure your fire system works.
Whilst spring cleaning, focus on one room at a time. This way, you will not get overwhelmed and feel like you are not getting anywhere.
It is a good idea to begin with the room that needs the biggest cleaning, as you should tackle it when your motivation and energy levels are at their highest.
You should also create a checklist of individual tasks, such as polishing and dusting surfaces, wiping walls, washing curtains, and steam-cleaning the carpets, as this will make them more manageable.
As much as you can, take furniture outside to clean it. This will reduce the level of dust particles that circulate within your rooms.
Regarding cleaning, some products do a better job than others.
You also get what you pay for. So, it is worth spending a bit more for a good brand that will properly do the job the first time you ask.
Look for products that are water-based and have been specifically designed for industrial or commercial cleaning purposes.
Ensure they have no allergens and are environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and odor-free.
If you don’t want to pay corporations for cleaning products, you might prefer to make some homemade, natural solutions instead.
Once you have completed the fixing, renovating, and spring cleaning, it is worth giving your house a complete airing out.
During the colder months of winter, it is understandable that you will want to keep the windows closed and turn on the heating.
However, doing this can create a virulent breeding ground for harmful bacteria, leading to health allergies such as flu, colds, or allergies.
Airing out your home for at least a couple of hours will significantly improve its air quality, which means you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor much more agreeably.
