The Most Popular Interior Paint Colors

Last Updated on November 18, 2024 by Tanya Janse van Rensburg

This blog concerns three of Australia’s favorite interior design paint colors: an Old English sheepdog and 50 years of Dulux paint in the UK.

In March 2012, Dulux Australia promoted ‘Australian’s Favorite Colors.’ It was interesting to note that the three most loved Dulux colors are ‘Antique White USA’ and ivory white, which are the most popular in the architectural market.

Number two, ‘Natural White, ’ is slightly less warm and lighter than Antique White, and number three, ‘Hog Bristle,’ is a beige, white color.

I have noted that the ‘Hot Bristle’ is the color I have selected the most for the assignments I have marked. I have also selected ‘Antique White USA’ for many projects.

This week, I received the large samples of the colors in a folder with the Old English sheepdog on the cover.

As I gazed at the dog, I remembered the beautiful dog used in the commercials here in Australia.

I was lucky enough to enjoy the company of one of the dogs, dear Boz when I worked in an interior design firm with his owner.

My favorite Aussie colors made me wonder about the interior paint colors of the UK and the USA.

When I visited the UK Dulux website, I discovered that Dulux UK had celebrated 50 years of advertising using an old English sheepdog in 2011.

I couldn’t find the most popular interior paint colors in the UK, but I did gather information on the Dulux paint colors used through the decades.

So, I got distracted. I’m a sucker for history of any sort.

The dog was first used in 1961. The '60s saw a DIY boom; colors like ‘Summer Blue’ were popular. In the '70s, ‘Sunshine’ and ‘Lime Juice’ were fashionable.

Different shades of the same color were used on the walls, ceiling, and architectural detailing. In the '80s, peach and grey were the hallmarks of an up-to-date room.

Colors like ‘Early Dawn, ‘Coral White,’ and ‘Apricot White’ are famous for color schemes.

During the 1990s, pastel shades of lilac, green, and cream were fashionable.

The colours ‘Sapphire Satin’ and ‘Irish Cream’ were also popular. Themed rooms became popular in the late 1990s.

Neutrals were used with vibrant colors, and colors like ‘Japanese Cherry’ and ‘Jade Taffeta’ were considered trendy.

The 2000s started with a move toward neutrals, with colors like ‘Natural Hessian’ and ‘Perfectly Taupe.’

From 2004 to 2006, new, lighter neutrals became popular, making rooms appear bigger and lighter.

In 2007, the trend for feature walls began with paint colors like ‘Mulberry Burst’ and ‘Raspberry Diva.’

In 2010, individual taste took prominence with colors likeLemon PunchandIndigo Infusion. In 2011, unusual color combinations and the attitude of anything and everything were possible.

Colors likeLuscious Limeand' Purple Poutwere right on trend. Don’t you just love the names? I must admit I find the colors delicious.

I had intended to move on to the most popular colors in the USA in this blog, but it is best to save that for another post.

I love the color (or color to some) and have gotten off track, what with Boz the dog and Dulux UK 50 years through the decades.

You may be interested in visiting the Dulux UK website to see everything; as you can tell, I found it most interesting.
