SampleBoard Rebirth: An Honest Conversation with our Designer Founder

Here at SampleBoard we are very excited to announce that we will (finally!) be launching our new look and feel and user dashboard on August 19, followed by a new moodboard creator we are busy working on, to be revealed in the first quarter of next year.

On a personal level, I need to apologise for the delay in launching new features, fixing bugs and not keeping you in the loop. My pregnancy become very high risk and I needed to step away from the business for a while.

As a non-technical founder, the only thing worse than your company struggling is knowing that it’s entirely your fault. But my hands were tied, I had to refrain from any type of stress that could jeopardize my baby’s wellbeing.

Watching from a distance the nose dive SampleBoard was taking, my life’s work crumbling, growth slowing to a crawl, I was faced with the raw reality of the polar opposites I found myself in: the most precious and magical time in my personal life, was mirrored by the darkest doom of my professional one. For the first time I entertained the thought of selling the company at a fraction of what it could be worth, and walking away from it all.

But there was one thing that kept bothering me: what example am I setting for my daughter? What will I tell her when she asks “what did you do before you became my mommy?” and I would say “I built a software, against all odds, that helped designers around the world create professional mood boards, but then I got defeated and tired and decided to shut it down…

Simply imagining her little face, scrunched up with confusion, with a simple, honest comeback question: “why?”

So I rephrased the conversation in my head, as I was holding my newborn baby in my arms…”I built an amazing software, against all odds, that helps thousands of designers around the world create professional moodboards in a matter of minutes, and then I did it all over again, using the mistakes I’ve made, and the lessons I’ve learnt along the way, to create an even better version.”

Why” she would ask? And I would answer: “Because you can do anything you put your mind to, you just need to persevere.”

Thank you for your loyal support during this trying time, helping us keep the lights on.

I look forward to spending the next chapter of the SampleBoard journey with you.
